Magnetic heading sensors provide accurate directional information for helicopters, unmanned air vehicles, underwater vehicles and towed sensor systems. |
· |
The magetometer measures Earth’s magnetic field in three vectors (x, y & z) |
· |
It works in conjunction with other on-board sensing elements that measure the air frame vertical reference |
· |
The flight navigation / control computer combines this data and computes an accurate heading reference |
· |
This heading reference is needed to ensure that other sensors (cameras) / weapon system (laser guidance) are able to target accurately |
· |
Some UAVs rely on GPS only, but whilst GPS tells you where you are, it does not tell you what heading you are on |
